Although it isn't necessary, forming a committee is an effective way to get things done for your loved one. Having the skill set of many people and sharing the tasks makes it easier to get everything that needs to get done completed. On this page we have included our mission statement, introduced the committee members linking them to LinkedIn when appropriate and sharing all the committee has done and had planned to do in the future. The first order of business was to create a catchy phrase, "The Time Doesn't Fit the Crime" and create a banner that was used on every website page, and many promotional items such as bookmarks, postcards, and t-shirts created and sent out to bring awareness to Lenny's case.
Justice4Lenny Committee Information:
The Justice4Lenny “The Time Doesn’t Fit the Crime” Committee was founded in March of 2012 by Lionel Maybin, with the following goal:
The Justice4Lenny Committee’s focus is to gain the acknowledgment of the Commonwealth of Virginia in regards to Lenny Singleton’s unjust sentence. The Committee believes he has served his time, and that the sentence he received is a violation of his human rights according to the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
“I created and established this organization to fight to free my brother, Lenny Singleton, who has served almost 20 years of 2 Life Sentences plus 100 years. I call Lenny my Hero because I am proud of the man he has become.”
Lenny committed a series of "grab & dash" robberies in 7 days under the influence of crack cocaine. No one was hurt. These were his first felonies. He didn’t have a gun during any of the incidents. During his entire incarceration, he has never received any infraction for anything and has worked at Virginia Correctional Enterprises and lived in the Honor's Dormitory.

The Justice4lenny committee has been busy since march 2012:
- There is a Justice4Lenny Website, www.justice4lenny.org that includes information about Lenny’s situation in detail, shows letter of support from his fellow inmates and a letter from his current supervisor at Nottoway, information about the Committee and its members, recent “wins” against injustice, Resources, and a page devoted to “What You Can Do to Help;”
- We have a Facebook account, “Lenny Singleton” with over 4700 Friends;
- A YouTube Video that allows you to hear Lenny speak about his situation in his own words and really illustrates this heinous injustice;
- A YouTube Video that shares the story of Lenny and his wife.
- A petition on the Change.org website that will be utilized to show public support when we approach the Governor with a Clemency Request;
- The Committee created a variety of marketing products such as t-shirts, hats, bracelets, postcards, and bookmarkers to utilize in fundraisers and other outreach attempts. You can request an item by emailing justice4lenny@gmail.com;
- Lenny and his wife have written and published a book, "Love Conquers All," available on Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, and at Balboa Press;
- Lenny & Vandy were married in Nottoway Correctional Facility on August 20, 2015;
- Vandy spoke before the Governor's Commission to look into restoring parole in Virginia and left all 30 members a copy of their book;
- Officially filed Lenny's petition in the Governor's Office, received on December 22, 2015.
- Gained national attention and a feature story on the cover of The New York Times on July 4, 2016;
- Featured in a newscast on WTKR, a CBS affiliate in November of 2016, in which the only victim that Lenny brandished a table knife at, forgave Lenny and hopes he will be released;
- Internet exposure via AlterNet to 3.5 million subscribers;
- International attention at the Geneva Conference utilizing Lenny's story as an example of why The War on Drugs should end in America.
We have been busy! But we aren’t done yet – Lenny is not free!
Justice4lenny upcoming activities:
- We found an attorney we like that has an excellent track record and that had a “win” for Travion Blount in Norfolk, Virginia.
- We are currently waiting to hear on Lenny's petition, officially received by the Governor's Office on December 22, 2015.
- We are always on the look-out for media exposure and currently have about 5 "irons in the fire". We hope these will pan out soon or that Lenny will actually be released soon.

“Lenny deserves a second chance. I fight this injustice because it is an injustice against us all when one of us can be so grossly sentenced. Lenny is scheduled to die in prison for a crime that didn’t involve any violence. Our prisons are filled with more Americans than ever before, and the fabric of our society is starting to feel the consequences of this. I fight because I was taught to be my brother’s keeper!” Learn more about Vandy.

Currently, Lenny has only one recourse, and that is to request a Conditional Pardon or a Commutation of Sentence from the Governor of Virginia. Because pardons of this nature are so rare, it is essential that we have legal support. Learn about Lenny’s situation, and ask yourself, what if this was someone I knew or loved, would I allow this kind of injustice to continue?
“The Time doesn’t fit the crime; the time has been served.
Let us give Lenny what he deserves.
Free Leonard L. Singleton!”
